This isn't exactly a long story in writing, but rather a long story broken up in a series of short stories. This is the first. It's also a very good way for me to get back into writing. It's also a study of characters we only glimpse in the last book. I hope you enjoy!

“Mum, your husband has gone mad!”
“He’s right mum, tell him stop being mad!”
“I mean, he’s just creepy.”
“And mean.”
“And creepy.”
“I think he’s rather charming.”
James and Albus looked over their shoulder, frowning at their sister who suddenly turned bright pink at the attention. “Well, what?” she stammered. “He’s never said a mean word to me.”
Ginny Weasley gently rolled her eyes at her children before taking a sip of her coffee. Behind her, the dishes were being washed in the fashion her mother had taught her, while the children’s school things were being tucked away in the cupboard until the end of summer vacation.
Meanwhile, James looked sour and Albus wore a very concerned look; apparently their mother wasn’t seeing the absolute logic behind what they were saying. It was a very dire situation indeed.
“What’s this, then?” a voice asked from the doorway.
“Daddy!” Lily bounded away from her brothers to throw herself into her father’s arms. “Missed you!”
Harry smiled brightly and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Missed you too sweetheart. Now what’s this I hear about your father being mad?”
“Oh I don’t think you’re mad Daddy!” cried Lily.
James pointed furiously at a door beyond the kitchen. “Why did you have that thing brought in from Hogwarts!? It was perfectly fine where it was in Professor Auchre’s office!”
“Says you,” muttered Albus. “I had to look at it every time—" he stopped short, looking up wildly at his father, then at his mother. “I mean to say—"
“That, young man,” said Ginny, “is a conversation your father and I were going to have with you this summer.”
Albus sagged his shoulders in defeat. “Right then,” he said softly.
James was determined not to let this derail him. “He’s sinister, dad! He keeps … jeering us every time we walk into the den. Even mum made a comment!”
Harry looked quizzically at Ginny, who was blushing guilty scarlet. “Well, I mean, it was becoming a tad obscene. I had to threaten him with fire when he called James a--”
“Oh! What’s a prat, daddy?” asked Lily. Harry let her down gently, trying obviously not to laugh.
“It’s right funny, isn’t it? Calling your son a prat? Well I am not setting foot in the den until he’s gone!” said James righteously. Albus nodded sharply next to him and folded his arms in demonstration of his equally iron will.
“I see,” Harry said. “Well, no worries, children. I was going to move him into my study. You won’t have to see him, or hear him anymore.”
Both boys looked at each other triumphantly. Lily looked as though she had lost a new toy. “But Daddy, he’s nice to me.”
“I know darling, and you’ll still be able to visit him.” This promise suddenly meant a lot more to Lily than anything else being discussed; no one was ever allowed into her father’s study, not even her mum!
“Thank you!” she squealed, giving his waist a great big squeeze before running out of the kitchen.
“You both clean up for supper,” Ginny told the two boys, stopping them from edging toward the door to the backyard. Moaning about the injustice of it all, they then fought their way upstairs trying to pass in front of the other.
Ginny smiled a little distantly at her husband. “I’m sorry about that. I know how much the portrait means to you. I didn’t want to move it until you knew where it was going.”
Harry was already sorting through the owl post. He looked up distractedly, humming in question. Ginny sighed and shook her head. “Dinner’s about to be served,” she said as the newly cleaned dishes flew toward to the table to be set.
Smiling, Harry nodded and left without another word.
