If you squint hard enough, you might see a mini-rant in here.

Following my complete fangirl moment yesterday where I conceived many obscene and intricately detailed fantasies concerning Simon Pegg, I almost forgot that I had a date with my husband tomorrow night to see Star Trek.  Now, Simon Pegg as Scottie?  I'm having a hard time separating the cult-instigator from it all.  Simon Pegg is awesome and all, but I can't help but cringe a bit in fear that he might have been cast as comic relief.  Hopefully, I am wrong, and he will be stellar.

However, I'm still sour over the fact they never bothered to even conceive making a DS9 movie, so I am going tomorrow with a bit of a relunctant stride.  My husband, who is (unforgivably) an Enterprise fan and scoffs DS9 for everything but the sodding Dominion War arc and Kira in a catsuit, assures me that I will like it and that I should carry with me an open mind.  My open mind says that I am going to assist a movie with more flash, less brains.  Let's face it, DS9 was a bit of a black sheep when it came out.  It was gritty, brainy, had rich characterisation and gripping storylines.  That is, before they tried to reach statistical percentage of their audience with war, explosions and women who suddenly forgot they had brains and balls (honestly, can anyone *really* deny the sex-kitten makeover Kira got in the latter seasons??).  But apparently, this sedentary universe they created with DS9 was not interesting enough to script into a movie, and the series was brushed aside for the younger, more modern Enterprise (ooo look, their ship looks more advanced than the original series' ship!).  And again, they do so with the Star Trek movie (ooo look, sex, explosions, sword fights and brawls!).

*Bracing sigh*

I digress, and I apologize.  These are my thoughts and opinions.  Still, when I go see a Star Trek movie, I would like a little more intellectual variety than a villain bent on world domination and a captain determined to destroy everything in his path to avenge so-and-so.  I miss the quiet social politics Picard offered, the rebellious ramifications Sisko brought and the sensitive determination Janeway gave us.

I'm with you on the DS9 movie.

That was absolutely the best of the Trek series.

I enjoyed the other series too, but never as much as DS9. I'm so sad we didn't see another series touch on the same grittiness and questionable ethics DS9 did.

I liked DS9 the best out of all of the newer Trek series, however friends in the know tell me that DS9 was always the least-popular Trek series, and so, understanbly, I can see Paramount being reluctant to mount a DS9 film. They are after all, in it for the cold hard money and not the love of Trek. :/

True true true, couldn't agree more. They will certainly not want to cater to a small percentage of the Trek fans who truly loved DS9.

I am such a die-hard Spock fan, but you have a point here: "I miss the quiet social politics Picard offered, the rebellious ramifications Sisko brought and the sensitive determination Janeway gave us.

So true.

Oh Spock is a mini-series of his own :) He's one of those undying characters who very very few don't like.

Glad to hear I am not the only Janeway fan! Though Voyager overall, was mostly fluff.

Sadly, yes. But Janeway was awesome. I would have liked to see her in a sort of DS9-style Trek, rather than the fluffy Voyager. Although there are a few episodes and arcs that held their own.

In many ways, it's very difficult to make a Star Trek movie, because all the Treks are so different. I like that this one is in the format of the original, and wouldn't see anything wrong with Simon Pegg!Scottie being comic relief, because that was sort of Scottie's role all along. Similarly, sex, two-dimensional bad guys and Captain Kirk being camp as a row of tents should all be in attendance. As well as, please god let this be so, a sexily intellectual Spok.

In many ways, NG was the departure -- look at OS and NG next to each other, and they don't even look like the same series. Except, possibly, for the first season episodes when Troy was in her little cheerleaderesque costume. I think it's certainly the only series that 'sexed-down'.

I too have a husband that loved Enterprise. I think he and your husband make up the entire fan base, don't they?

I agree that all Treks are different -- my only gripe is that they've so far made TOS and TNG movies and have not touched upon the other series. While there is no contest that both TOS and TNG sort of revolutionized ST on their own, it would have been nice to see them expand the big-screen universe.

But after seeing the first part of the new Trek, I have to say that it was a refreshing departure from the other movies. I am sad to say I didn't get to see Scottie, but Kirk was comic relief on his own, without it being forced.

As for Enterprise, I only have to say: Ugh. :D
